Osmolality can be used as an effective and reliable drug-screening tool. Law enforcement officials can use osmometers in forensics laboratories and at crime scenes as part of the investigative process. For instance, teenagers who go to rave clubs sometimes bring their drugs in liquid form (often carried in a water bottle). An osmometer can determine if the fluid in the bottle is water or if narcotics are present. The osmometer is more than a lab or hospital instrument and can be used in many environments.
